MPPT vs PWM charge controllers
Harvest, voltage flexibility and when PWM is enough.
Published
At a glance
| MPPT | PWM | |
|---|---|---|
| Harvest | Typically higher | Lower when panel voltage exceeds battery |
| Panel voltage | Can be much higher than battery | Should closely match battery |
| Cold weather | Captures extra voltage | Extra voltage wasted |
| Cost and size | Higher | Lower |
| Best for | Most arrays | Very small 12 V setups |
Choose mppt if…
- Array is more than a couple hundred watts
- Panels are wired in series
Choose pwm if…
- A single small panel matched to a 12 V battery
- Lowest cost matters
Why MPPT wins at scale
MPPT lets you wire panels in series at higher voltage, cutting current and wire size on long runs, then steps voltage down to the battery.
Bottom line
MPPT is the usual choice; PWM fits tiny, matched 12 V systems.
