Power It Up: can a power station run a space heater?
A 1,500 W space heater drains a 1kWh power station in well under an hour. Here's the math and better options for staying warm.
Published · Updated

Most plug-in space heaters draw up to about 1,500 W on high. A 1kWh-class station has about 750–850 Wh of estimated usable energy, so that's roughly 30–35 minutes. Battery power is a poor fit for resistive heating.
- Heaters are resistive loads: watts in = heat out.
- 1,500 W for one hour is 1,500 Wh, more than any station in our reference set holds.
- Low settings help, but only a little.
What a space heater draws
| Item | Example figure | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| High setting (typical label) | 1,500 W | Common maximum for plug-in heaters; check your label |
| Low setting (example) | 750 W | Many heaters have a half-power setting; check your label |
| One hour on high | 1,500 Wh | 1,500 × 1 |
How we do the math
Runtime (hours) ≈ usable watt-hours ÷ the device's average watts. Our reference set is five portable power stations whose specs we compiled in the Spec Check series. Estimated usable AC energy (our estimate: usable ≈ rated Wh × 0.80 (usable depth, Victron LiFePO4 data) × 0.92 (inverter, the NREL PVWatts manual derate) ≈ 0.736. Applying these to a power station gives a planning estimate, not a measurement): RIVER 3 ≈180Wh, DELTA 3 ≈754Wh, Anker C1000 ≈777Wh, Jackery 1000 v2 ≈788Wh, BLUETTI AC180 ≈848Wh.
Every device wattage on this page is an example. Read your own device's label or EnergyGuide sticker, or measure it with a plug-in energy meter, then put your number into the Power Planner.
Runtime on each reference station
| Power station | Est. usable Wh | Est. runtime |
|---|---|---|
| EcoFlow RIVER 3 | ≈180 | Not suitable (300W outlet) |
| EcoFlow DELTA 3 | ≈754 | ≈30 min on high |
| Anker SOLIX C1000 | ≈777 | ≈31 min on high |
| Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 | ≈788 | ≈32 min on high, right at its 1,500W rating |
| BLUETTI AC180 | ≈848 | ≈34 min on high |
The smallest station that fits
To run a heater on high you need an output rating of at least 1,500 W: the C1000, AC180 and DELTA 3 (1,800W) qualify, and the Jackery 1000 v2's 1,500W rating is right at the limit. None will run it for long. If you must, the BLUETTI AC180 has the most estimated usable energy.

BLUETTI AC180 (1,152Wh)
1,800W output and the most estimated usable Wh in the group.

- An electric blanket or heated pad uses a small fraction of a space heater's watts (check its label) and heats you rather than the room.
- Close off one room and cover windows.
- A furnace blower on backup power needs a transfer switch fitted by a licensed electrician.
Never use a generator, grill or camp stove indoors for heat. The CDC warns these produce carbon monoxide.
FAQ
How long will a 1,000 Wh station run a 1,500 W heater?
About 30–35 minutes using the estimate in this article, and only if the station's output is rated at 1,500 W or more.
